Head
Baseball Coach Mitch Hoying
Coach Mitch Hoying is entering his 8th year as the head coach of
the Jacket Baseball Program. He served one year as a Varsity Assistant
for longtime head coach Dave King and became the head coach in 2001.
Hoying is a graduate of Lehman Catholic High School and earned a
Bachelors and Masters degree from the University of Kentucky prior
to joining Sidney High School as a Social Studies Teacher. Coach
Hoying has a five-year-old son named Grant.
Under the leadership of the coaching staff the Varsity team has
steadily improved their performance in league play, as well as increased
participation at the high school and Jr. High levels. The program
is poised for continued success after posting back to back sectional
titles in 2007 and 2008.
The Jackets missed a share of the GWOC Title in 2008 by dropping
a 15-14 decision in the final league game of the season but rebounded
to post a sectional championship. Tournament success is a constant
focus for the Jackets who have at least one tournament win in 8
consecutive seasons.
Many great individuals have played in recent seasons. Eight different
players have earned 1st Team MVBCA honors with three participating
the Mizuno All-Ohio Series and two earning first team all state
recognition. In addition, ten players have continued their baseball
careers in the college ranks.
Increased success has led to a greater interest shown by the student
body, as evidenced by the presence of the first ever freshman team
in 2006 and increased partcipation in the summer Junior High teams
and the 5th/6th grade Team. Sidney Baseball strives to challenge
for the GWOC championship each year while working at the younger
levels to develop the most well rounded players possible.
"The best part about coaching in Sidney is the work ethic of
the kids and the support provided by School Administration, parents,
and community volunteers,” said Hoying, adding, “Countless
mothers and fathers have donated time and money to the effort --
working on the diamond, running concessions, organizing banquets,
coaching Jr. High teams, and dealing with short notice weather situations
are made easy by the cooperation of parents. Without a total team
and family effort our improvement would never be possible.” |
