in her 23rd year of teaching. She teaches Physical Education and
Health at Northwood School. Coach Mentges started bowling herself
in a junior league when she was in third grade. She now bowls in
two different leagues, participates in State tournaments, as well
as the National bowling tournament. Her average has improved with
her coaching. “Master Every Frame, Be A Student Of The Game”
is her philosophy. Coach Mentges started the high school bowling
program under the direction of Jerry “Jaws” Knoop, Bel-Mar
Lanes proprietor, in 2001. OHSAA sanctioned bowling as a high school
sport in 2007. Sidney High School made it an official sport with
the 2007-2008 season. Coach Mentges has achieved various bowling
instructor certifications: Dick Ritger Level I, USBC Level I, and
USBC Bronze Certification. Coach Mentges has devoted herself to
improving youth bowlers by starting to work with them when they
are young. The City Parks & Recreation Dept. holds a one week
clinic each summer for students in grades 1-8 that Coach Mentges
leads. There is a middle school bowling club that she coaches. Coach
Mentges also leads a summer instructional bowling camp that meets
every Wednesday at Bel-mar. She also gives private and/or group
lessons for students and adults. Contact Bel-Mar Lanes for more
information.
Bowling for SHS starts at the beginning
of November with open bowling. Tryouts are around the second week
of November. Competition begins in December and continues into February.
Tournament play commences in February and the state tournament is
usually the first weekend in March. Bowlers are encouraged to compete
in leagues outside of the high school season. New bowlers are welcome.
All it takes is an open mind and a good effort! |

March 5, 2010 - STATE TOURNAMENT
Knoop Ends Up 29th In The State
Out of approximately 2,500 high school bowlers, Sidney’s Trent Knoop, just a sophomore, ranks 29th. Trent bowled well on an oil pattern that didn’t particularly suit his style. We were given the pattern prior to the tournament and bowled on it in the practice round on Thursday. The pattern was a Kegel pattern called the “Beaten Path.” It was only 41 feet long with no oil buffed beyond that point. There was plenty of oil but it was all on the front end. The back-ends snapped uncontrollably. It took us a while in practice to try to find a line. Trent was rolling his least hooking ball but it was still a very difficult shot. The two bowlers who finished first and second were both strokers. Trent is a cranker. His high rev rate was difficult to control on this pattern. In hindsight I don’t think we had all of the equipment that he needed. He needed a ball with a lower perfect scale rating. The perfect scale rates the hook potential of bowling balls from 0~220. 0 being least hook and 220 currently being the most hook. Trent’s lowest ps was a 179. One of the other individual bowlers from Stebbins, also a big cranker, finished his last game with his plastic ball, ps of 0. Taking some hand out of the delivery is another option, but one that we had not worked on. We found ourselves in a unique situation. Had Trent owned a lower ps ball it would have been the only day this season he would have used it. Trent’s scores were: 179, 226, and 196 for a 601 series.
February 27, 2010 - DISTRICT TOURNAMENT
Trent Knoop Advances to State!
Trent Knoop and Brad Hutchinson both qualified as individuals in the sectional tournament to compete in the district tournament. The boys bowled at Eastern Lanes in Middletown on Tuesday. We saw the same pattern that the girls had rolled on the day before. It gave us an opportunity to have our equipment cleaned up and ready to go and to consider the possible options before beginning. Trent worked hard all day. If he missed by a half a board it didn’t come back. He made a ball change going into the second game that allowed him some swing with a better break point. He finished with a 664 series. His games consisted of 206, 233, and 225. He was 3rd in the list of individuals that were not on advancing teams. He will participate as an individual bowler at the State level this Friday in Chillicothe. Brad Hutchinson made an excellent run at advancing. He started out with a 279 game. He threw 11 strikes along with a 9 spare in the 5th frame. His second game he came back with a 203. For the first two games Brad had a little wiggle room to his line but that started to change in the third game. In his third game he ran into a little carry-down and the ball didn’t finish. He made a few adjustments but they didn’t work out. He ended with a 156. Brad’s series was a 638. The 5th score making it out of Districts was a 656. Both boys rolled really well today. Bowling as an individual is a lot tougher than having your team of 8 together on the lanes.
February 19, 2010 - SECTIONAL TOURNAMENT
Two Bowlers Advance to the District Tournament
Sidney 4192
The shot was there. It was fairly easy, but we simply lacked some consistency and any luck in baker. We had two 7-10 pocket shots in baker. The scores overall were extremely high. Northwestern finished first with a 4632; that included 3 regular games and 6 baker games. That averages out to 221 per game. That’s almost un-heard-of. We rolled on the shot Thursday night and we were hot, but today just wasn’t our day. We did face a little more oil today than what we saw last night though. As a team we finished with a 4192. We were 201 pins shy of being one of the top four teams and advancing to districts. The top four individuals, not on the advancing teams, will advance to the district championships next Saturday at Eastern Lanes in Middletown. Trent Knoop rolled games of 257, 210, and 237 for a 704 series. Brad Hutchinson rolled games of 213, 203, and 238 for a 654. Both boys will advance to the district competition. Dru Olding rolled a Kevin Cotterman both rolled 213 games today. Scoreboard: Regular Game #1 1015 in 6th position/16 teams, Regular Game #2 1001 in 5th position, Regular Game #3 937 in 7th position. Baker Games 182, 222, 186, 252, 173, 224 = 1239. 4192 grand total.
February
13, 2010 - GWOC Championship Tournament Results
Going into the Championship tournament Sidney boys were 7th
out of 16 teams in the GWOC and 3rd in the North Division.
The girls were 3rd out of 16 teams in the GWOC and 2nd in
the North Division. The boys moved into a tie for 5th in the
GWOC and took 3rd in the North Division. The girls remained
in 3rd in the GWOC and 2nd in the North Division. In the three
regular game round Bethany Pellman received a medal for 4th
Place All Tournament Team Honors by rolling a 610 series consisting
of a 236, 175, and 199. Kristin Abbott took 5th Place All
Tournament Team Honors by rolling a 600 series with games
of 171, 213, and 216. Michelle Abbott added a 199 game. For
the boys Trent Knoop received a medal for his 2nd Place All
Tournament Team finish with a 683 series. He had games of
204, 214, and 265. Chris Duncan had a 631 series rolling games
of 215, 223, and 193, while Dru Olding added a 206. These
are great scores for the difficulty of the oil pattern. The
baker round consisted of 10 games. The girls threw an average
of 184 in baker; including a 245 game. In her last 20 baker
shots Kristin Abbott threw 3 strikes, spared a 3-10 split,
threw another 6 strikes, left and spared a ringing 10 pin,
and finished with the last 9 strikes. Bowling only two balls
per game and switching lanes every other game makes baker
quite challenging. Kristin did an outstanding job today! The
boys stepped up on the lanes for the first baker game and
proceeded to set a new record by throwing a 290. The first frame was a 3-10 split and spare but the rest were strikes.
The boys put together a 196 average in the ten baker games.
Our kids never gave up. They pushed through baker and their
scores show their hard work.
February 11, 2010
Sidney 2079 Butler 2135
Sidney boys lost a close match to Vandalia Butler Thursday
evening at Bel-Mar Lanes. Sidney trailed by just 22 pins after
the first two regular games. We missed a number of spares
during the first two regular games that we should have covered.
Zach Griffith rolled a 214 and Dru Olding a 204. In the first
baker game we couldn’t find the pocket. We threw three
major splits: a 4-7-10, a 6-7-10, and a 4-10. That cost us
another 18 pins: Sidney 141 to Vandalia’s 163. The second
baker game we rolled a 167 to Vandalia’s 179. We struggled
all night trying to find the right line. It seemed that we
were either too heavy or too light. This brings the boys record
to 12-6 overall and 4-3 in the North division. We honored
our seniors tonight as this was our last home game: Kristin
Abbott, Brad Hutchinson, Zach Griffith, Chris Duncan, and
Kevin Cotterman.
February 8, 2010
Sidney 2099 Springboro 1954
The boys’ team also won with a score of 2099 to 1954.
Trent Knoop led the team with a 253 and Dru Olding had a 377
2-game series. The teams bowled well for the unique conditions.
We had bowled at Poelking South earlier in the season and
the oil pattern this time was much longer than what we had
experienced before. The bowlers made some good adjustments.
One pair of lanes had not been oiled at all but the bowlers
were able to pick up on that in the warm-up. We’ve got
a lot of rookies bowling on the varsity squad and they are
really improving, making many adjustments on their own, as
they continue to bowl on various oil patterns.
February 7, 2010 - JV GWOC
Championships Results
The boys JV team bowled in the JV GWOC Championships on Sunday
in Centerville. Sidney placed 8th. The top two teams, Kettering
Fairmont and Centerville, received awards. Our boys bowled
well. They have all improved throughout the season and today
they improved even more. I was impressed with their calm,
cool mental game. Sidney was led by Willie Clark and Doug
Huffman who both threw 483 series.
January 29, 2010
Sidney 2307 Piqua 2069
Both teams defeated the Piqua Indians Friday evening at Bel-Mar
Lanes. The boys set a new school record for high baker game.
Zach Griffith, Doug Huffman, Chris Duncan, Dru Olding, and
Trent Knoop combined their efforts into a 258 game. They started
with an open, two single pin spares and the rest were strikes.
In the regular game rounds Trent Knoop led the team with games
of 235 and 214, Dru Olding rolled a 247 and a 202, Chris Duncan
had a 212, and Zach Griffith added a 191. In JV action Devin
Huffman bowled a 186.
January 26, 2010
Sidney 2383 Troy 2627
Both teams were defeated Tuesday by two very strong teams.
Troy girls have not lost a match all year. They are well coached
and very good bowlers. Troy boys had only lost one game this
year and that was against our boys when they bowled at Bel-Mar.
Troy boys are now 14-1 and 4-1 in the North division. Troy
has had a strong program for years. We are always trying to
get by them. Sometimes we do and sometimes we don’t.
I am extremely proud of how well we bowled at Sherwood Lanes
though. The shot was fairly dry to begin with which put many
bowlers into a different ball right from the start. The lane
conditions changed rapidly from breaking down to carrying
oil down within two games. The boys led Troy 1058 to 1049
following the first regular game. Trent Knoop had a 253, Dru
Olding a 224, and Chris Duncan had a 213. Once again Troy
made adjustments with the carry-down quicker than we did.
Troy shot and outstanding 1140 for the second regular game
and we rolled a 952. Dru Olding thru a 214 in his second game.
In JV action Devin Huffman threw a 214 and Zach Cole a 189.
January 25, 2010
Sidney 2494 Springfield 2146
For the boys Brad Hutchinson rolled games of 235 and 245,
Trent Knoop rolled a 208 and a 231, Dru Olding rolled a 208,
and Chris Duncan rolled a 227.
January 22, 2010
Sidney 2362 Fairborn 2134
Sidney girls and boys both beat Trotwood Friday evening. For
the boys Trent Knoop rolled a 234 and a 201. Trent leads the
conference with a 226 average. Dru Olding threw games of 249
and 245 tonight. Dru is carrying a 205 average, 9th in the
North Division. Zach Griffith added a 203. In JV action Zach
Cole rolled a 199.
January 19, 2010
Sidney 2391 Fairborn 2252
Sidney boys beat Fairborn by a score of 2391 to 2252 Tuesday
evening. Fairborn boys placed 2nd out of 30 teams at the Baker
Bash tournament in Beavercreek on Monday. Fairborn came to
Sidney with a 9-3 record. The key for us was putting together
two baker games in the 200’s. We finished a match strong.
Dru Olding led the boys with games of 210 and 217, Trent Knoop
added a 211, Chris Duncan a 209, and Brad Hutchinson a 201.
This brings Sidney’s record to 8-4 in the conference.
In JV action Willie Clark threw a 190.
January 18, 2010 - Baker Bash
Tournament
Sidney boys threw games of 199, 132, 230, and 190 putting
them in 5th place after the first two rounds. They maintained
that 5th position for the next two rounds by throwing games
of 185, 218, 163, and 189. At that point in time the lanes
were a mixture of some being oily and some being dry depending
on who had been on those lanes and what lines they were throwing.
Sidney ended with games of 169 and 128. Zach Griffith and
Trent Knoop bowled well. Zach had 9 strikes (2 strings of
three) and Trent had 11 strikes (stringing 3 and 4) and another
6 strikes in his 10th frame bonus shots. We were able to bowl
all 8 boys on the roster today and everyone did their part
when they were in the match.
January 15, 2010
Sidney 2533 Troy 2264
Sidney boys handed Troy their first loss of the season. Troy
was 10-0 coming into the match. Looking at both teams stats
prior to the match, Sidney was about 250 pins below Troy.
Our boys bowled well and they had a few low games. In the
second regular game we had four bowlers throw above 200. That
gave us a new record for a regular game total of 1116. We
finished the match with two 200 games in baker; something
we plan to continue! Sidney’s record is now 7-4 overall
and 2-1 in our division. 200 games included: Trent Knoop,
255, Dru Olding, 258, Chris Duncan, 257, Zach Griffith, 211,
and Brad Hutchinson, 202. In JV action, Doug Huffman threw
games of 207 and 192.
January 13, 2010
Sidney 2266 Fairmont 2746
Sidney boys lost to a very strong Fairmont boys’ team.
In the two regular-games round Fairmont’s lowest score
was a 201. Trent Knoop led the boys with scores of 224 and
213. Zach Griffith rolled a 226.
January 12, 2010
Sidney 2206 Piqua 1827
Both teams were victorious in Piqua. Lane conditions were
atypical as the lane oiling machine broke the day before.
The girls were led by Kristin Abbott with a 223 and Courtney
Thorpe rolled a 186. The girls advance their conference record
to 8-1 and their division record to 2-0. The boys were led
by Trent Knoop with a 213 and a 256. Zach Griffith rolled
a 236. The boys’ conference record is now 6-3 and they
are 1-1 in our division. The bowlers learned a lesson in patience
and perseverance tonight. To be a good bowler you have to
keep adjusting and never give up. They put in the hard work
needed to be successful.
January 11, 2010
Sidney 2419 Butler 2500
Sidney boys lost another close match. At the conclusion of
the two regular games Sidney was trailing by just 36 pins.
Trent Knoop led the boys with a 224 and a 269, Zach Griffith
rolled a 226 and a 234, and Chris Duncan rolled games of 211
and 204. Trent is now carrying a 233 average; the second highest
average in the GWOC conference. In the baker games it seemed
that Sidney couldn’t “buy a strike.” They
had seven 9-pin counts in the first baker game and five 9-pin
counts in the second baker game. They left two open frames
in the first baker game and two open frames in the second
baker game. Sidney rolled a 177 to Butlers 192 for the first
baker game and a 183 to Butlers 213 for the second baker game.
January 5, 2010
Sidney 2293 Wayne 2310
Sidney boys lost a tough match to Wayne. At the conclusion
of the two regular games Sidney was leading by 4 pins. Sidney
threw a 171 and Wayne stumbled throwing only a 128 the first
baker game. That put Sidney ahead by 47 pins. The second baker
game Wayne threw 9 strikes with strings of 3, 4, and 2 for
a 255 game. Sidney boys only missed one spare but only threw
5 strikes. Sidney rolled a 191. Wayne won the match by 17
pins. It was a tough loss. Leading the boys was Trent Knoop
with games of 257 and 222. Brad Hutchinson added a 213.
January 3, 2010 - Buckeye High
School Classic Tournament
Sidney 1st
The Ohio State University Bowling Squad hosted the third annual
Buckeye High School Classic Tournament Sunday, January 3rd.
The university hosts the tournament to allow bowlers to bowl
on a “shot” similar to a collegiate pattern. The
Ohio State University bowlers and coaches are there and it’s
a good opportunity for our bowlers to get seen by the university
coaches. Dru Olding led the boys by shooting a 290 his first
game; a new school record. Dru threw a 7 spare in the first
frame and then buried the next 11 strikes. He followed up
with a 210 and a 243 for a 743 series. Dru took top honors
as the All Tournament Team Leader. Trent Knoop rolled a 636
series including a 234 game and Chris Duncan rolled a 631
series including a 236 game. At the conclusion of the first
regular game the team was tied for 2nd place. They were in
2nd place alone after the 2nd regular game and moved into
1st place following the third regular game. At the conclusion
of the 5 baker games the team had a total of 3970. St. Xavier
(Cincinnati) was in 2nd place with a 2907, LaSalle(Cincinnati)
was in third with a 3878, and North Ridgeville was 4th with
a 3854. The semi-finals was a best of three baker games: 1st
place vs. 4th and 2nd vs. 3rd, with the winners playing in
the finals. Sidney won the first baker playoff in two games
202-193 and 216-151 defeating North Ridgeville. In the final
round Sidney won in just two games beating LaSalle (Cincinnati)
214-142 and 202-190. Coach Abbott said the guys were simply
“on” all day long. They would miss a spare or
two and then come right back and string a number of strikes.
December 22, 2009
Centerville 2555, Sidney 2334, Miamisburg
2019
Tuesday evening both the Sidney boys and girls varsity teams
were defeated for the first time, in a tri-match, by the Centerville
Elks. Both teams did add another win though by beating Miamisburg.
The boys had a few spare misses on the left side of the lane.
The guys also had an unusually high number of splits. Leading
the boys was Chris Duncan with a 235 & a 253 and Dru Olding
rolling a 243 & a 201. We failed to make some keys reads
and adjustments.
December 19, 2009 - Holiday
Tournament
Sidney 6th
Both Sidney teams made a great effort at making it into the
“top 5” step ladder finals at the Holiday Tournament
in Chillicothe on Saturday. Zach Griffith led the boys with
a 610 series. Trent Knoop added a 238, Dru Olding a 222, and
Brad Hutchinson a 224. The boys started out strong with a
team effort of 1005 for the first game. Into the second and
third regular games the right lane broke down much faster
than the left lane and the boys ended up in a number of splits.
The boys were in 7th position entering the 5 game baker round;
99 pins out of 5th. In the 3rd and 4th baker games the boys
had what appeared to be, pretty good pocket shots and hung
a large number of ringing ten pins. The boys finished just
36 pins behind the 5th spot. Our teams are working very well
together. They understand that they are only as strong as
their 5th man. We’ve got 1 rookie starting on the boys’
varsity squad and 2 freshman girls both bowling on the girls’
varsity squad. I think they have all improved immensely.
December 18, 2009
Sidney 2392, Northmont 2135, Xenia 2115
Both the Sidney boy’s and girls varsity teams won their
second tri-match of the season. The teams bowled against Northmont
and Xenia at Bel-Mar Lanes on Friday, December 18th at 4:30.
Today the bowlers seemed right at home. After getting our
first match “nerves” out of our systems last week
the team settled in immediately today and made some good adjustments.
Both teams are now 4-0. For the boys Trent Knoop, sophomore,
set two new school records when he threw the new single game
high score of 279. He added a 244 for a 523 two game total;
also a new record. Brad Hutchinson added a 221 and Dru Olding
a 215.
December 11, 2009
Sidney 2352, Beavercreek 2220, Lebanon 2131
Both the Sidney boy’s and girls varsity teams won their
season openers. The teams bowled against Lebanon and Beavercreek
in a tri-match held at Bel-Mar Lanes on Friday, December 11th
at 4:30. Even though we were at home their mental game was a
bit shaky for the first regular game but improved as the match
continued. The lanes dried-out pretty quickly today and we needed
to make some fairly large adjustments. Some bowlers took a bit
too long to move inside. Overall it was a great learning experience
for all the bowlers. For the boys Trent Knoop, sophomore, rolled
a 247 and a 203. Dru Olding, junior, rolled a 198 and a 247.
Chris Duncan added a 244 and Brad Hutchinson a 201. |

March 6, 2010 - STATE TOURNAMENT
Sidney Girl’s Bowling Team Finishes 13th In The State Out Of 286 Teams
The girl’s team fell victim to their own high expectations Saturday in Chillicothe. Our physical game was more than ready but we let our emotions get the best of us and we weren’t able to perform as well as we could have. It was a difficult shot. All tournaments, sport shots, are difficult. I thought the girls were prepared for that. We had bowled in three tournaments during the regular season. In the Buckeye Classic we bowled in the final match and placed 2nd behind this year’s State Runner-up, Westerville Central. This was our 4th straight weekend tournament in post play. What we have on our side is our age, but then again, being young and new to the state tournament can also be intimidating. We will only lose one senior this year, Kristin Abbott. However, she will be missed. Kristin has been a fighter. She never quits. She is one of the most focused and dedicated players to the game that we’ve ever had. She has also been one of the greatest mentors. She sometimes spends more time working on her “bowling buddy’s” game than her own. She’s moving on to Wright State University next year and I know she’ll be a great team leader and motivator. Game summary: Following the first regular game we were 60 pins out of the top 8. We were in the 16th position out of 16 teams. Our first game score was an 840. We threw an 863 the second game to move up to the 14th position and we were 91 pins out of the top 8. We rallied our last regular game with a 945 and moved into 7th position. The top 8 advanced to the championship round. However, our three baker games set us back to 13th place. We rolled a 132 (5 opens), a 163 (2 opens), and a 126 (6 opens). We ended 101 pins short of being in the championship round. Final thoughts: We talked following the qualifying round. We talked about turning tears into motivation and determination. We discussed the fact that we needed to learn to accept lower scores when bowling on sports shots. We have to understand that the pins don’t fall as easily as they do on other shots. We have to be extremely precise on a sport shot or we’ll miss the pocket. Most importantly, we discussed the fact that you are never out of the game and that every single shot matters. Never, never, give up out of frustration.

Sidney Girls Fight Through To The End… Another Trip To The State Tournament
Sidney girls fought their way to the “sweet sixteen”. We played on a “shark pattern”. The oil was long and the area outside of 10 was out of bounds. There was hardly any backend. What looked like a decent pocket shot wouldn’t carry; too much oil and not a hard enough break-point. We finally moved everything to the right and shot straight at the pocket and started to get them to fall. Our spare coverage was not the greatest in our three regular games. We were sitting in 9th position after the first three regular games. We were only 30 pins out of 6th which was were we needed to be to advance to State. The problem being; we were one team in a large number of teams all within reach of 6th place at that time. With every baker game we got better. We started with a 146, 4 opens, the next two games of 162 and 178 we cut the open frames down to 3 each. In games 4 and 5 we scored 189 and 188 with only 1 open per game. We ended our last baker game with a strong 233 game with no opens. We even covered the 4-7-10 split! This was an exceptional team victory. Once again everyone was able to step in and knock down the pins. No one person carried the weight but instead every girl on the team worked and gave it her all. These girls never backed down. They kept their chins up and rolled with determination. That’s what makes good teams. Team members include: Michelle Abbott, Bethany Pellman, Courtney Thorpe, Jenna Shaffer, Kristen Abbott, Shelbie Anderson, Kaylee Jones, Hannah Meyer, and Ally Kittle. The girls’ team will bowl in the State Tournament this Saturday at Shawnee Lanes in Chillicothe. Competition begins at 11am. Playing on this pattern today gave us a good look at a completely different pattern than what we saw in Sectionals. The diversity that the girls are being exposed to is making their game stronger every day. Once again the GWOC will go into the State Championships with 4 teams advancing from the Southwest District Championship: Troy, Beavercreek, Centerville, and Sidney will make up 1/4th of the playing field at State. Scoreboard: Regular Game #1 793; Regular Game #2 829; Regular Game #3 821; Baker Games 146, 162, 178, 189, 188, & 233; Grand Total 3539.
February 20, 2010 - SECTIONAL TOURNAMENT
Sidney Girls on Fire… Beat the Competition by no less than 383 pins
Sidney 1st at 4217
Our first regular game captured two new school records. Bethany Pellman broke the school record for high game by throwing a 290. She started with a 9 spare and threw the next 11 strikes. Kristin Abbott rolled a 259, Jenna Shaffer a 236, Michelle Abbott a 201, and Courtney Thorpe a 192, giving the team a new school high game of 1178. This put the girls in first place with a 251 pin lead. Kristin Abbott followed up with a 244 for her second game and Bethany Pellman continued throwing strikes for the first 3 frames and ended with a 175. Bethany came back in the third game with a 256 to give her a 721 series. Kristin ended with a 181 giving her a 684 total. Bethany and Kristin placed 1st and 2nd overall individually. In baker the girls continued to hammer the pocket. We threw games of 216, 217, 202, 176, 195, and 186. All 8 bowlers on the roster bowled today. We had 4 different bowlers rolling in the 5th slot. The girls conquered their mental game in baker by leaving only 8 opens in 6 baker games. This was a terrific team win today. Scoreboard: Regular Game #1 1178, Regular Game #2 924, Regular Game #3 923. Baker Games 216, 217, 202, 176, 195, and 186. Grand Total = 4217.
Sidney 1937 Butler 1751
The girls coasted to an easy win with a score of 1937 to 1751.
Kristin Abbott led the girls with a 226 and a 236, Jenna Shaffer
added a 203. This brings the girls overall record to 15-3,
and 5-2 in the North division. We honored our seniors tonight
as this was our last home game: Kristin Abbott, Brad Hutchinson,
Zach Griffith, Chris Duncan, and Kevin Cotterman.
February 8, 2010
Sidney 1983 Springboro 1110
Sidney girls set a new school record Monday evening in Centerville
by throwing a 266 baker game. The girls threw the first 8
strikes, added an 8 spare in the 9th and a strike plus 8 additional
pins in the 10th frame. The girls bowling the 266 included:
Shelbie Anderson, Michelle Abbott, Bethany Pellman, Jenna
Shaffer, and Courtney Thorpe. Sidney beat Springboro 1983
to 1110. Springboro only had 4 girls bowling instead of 5.
Leading the girls was Kristin Abbott with a 334 2-game series
and Bethany Pellman with a 325 2-game series. The teams bowled
well for the unique conditions. We had bowled at Poelking
South earlier in the season and the oil pattern this time
was much longer than what we had experienced before. The bowlers
made some good adjustments. One pair of lanes had not been
oiled at all but the bowlers were able to pick up on that
in the warm-up. We’ve got a lot of rookies bowling on
the varsity squad and they are really improving, making many
adjustments on their own, as they continue to bowl on various
oil patterns.
January 29, 2010
Sidney 2008 Piqua 1743
Both teams defeated the Piqua Indians Friday evening at Bel-Mar
Lanes. The girls team was led by Kristin Abbott rolling a
201, Bethany Pellman added a 204, and Courtney Thorpe a 193.
January 26, 2010
Sidney 2142 Troy 2427
Following the first regular game
Sidney was only trailing by 18 pins. Shelbie Anderson rolled
a 206, Kristin Abbott a 211, and Jenna Shaffer a 222. With
the carry down the second game we lost a little ground. Jenna
Shaffer led the second regular game with a score of 203.
January 25, 2010
Sidney 2173 Springfield 1760
Sidney girls and boys both beat Springfield Monday evening.
For the girls Kristin Abbott had a 235 and a 219, Shelbie
Anderson had a 234. The girls are now 12-2 in the conference
and 3-1 in the North Division.
January 22, 2010
Sidney 2004 Trotwood 1264
Sidney girls and boys both beat Trotwood Friday evening. For
the girls Kristin Abbott had a 258. Kristin is now carrying
a 190 average, 8th highest average in the conference. Jenna
Shaffer is rolling a steady 189 average, 9th in the conference.
January 19, 2010
Sidney 2076 Fairborn 1846
The girls’ team also beat Fairborn. Fairborn girls had
a 9-3 record coming to Sidney and had a good showing at the
Baker Bash placing 5th, behind the Sidney girls who placed
2nd. Sidney was led by Jenna Shaffer who threw a 224 game
and Courtney Thorpe a 191. Sidney girls are now 10-2 in the
conference.
January 18, 2010 - Baker Bash
Tournament
Sidney Girls Bowling Team Takes 2nd place in the Baker
Bash Tournament!
Sidney girls finished 2nd at the Baker Bash tournament held
Monday at Beaver-Vu Bowl, Beavercreek. The tournament consisted
of 12 baker games rolled in sets of 2 on a pair of lanes.
After each set of two games, the teams in the top half, according
to their score for those two games, receives 20 extra bonus
pins. The teams moved a pair of lanes after each 2-game set.
Sidney threw games of 159 and 197 for the first round. That
put them in 4th place in a field of 26 teams. We threw games
of 181 and 175 for the 2nd round and 184 and 147 for the 3rd
rounds placing us into 2nd place after both rounds. We finished
the 5th round in first place with games of 183 and 168. Centerville
was trailing by 32 pins. The teams were re-positioned so that
1st place would bowl beside 2nd place and so on. That’s
when we got nervous and missed spares that we’d been
making before. We opened 5 times for a 134 and 4 times for
a 144. Centerville threw games of 216 and 189. I have to remember
that we are young and I’ve got to learn how to coach
the mental game better. Shelbie Anderson and Kristin Abbott
both bowled extremely well. Shelbie threw 12 strikes, stringing
3 and 5, and Kristin threw 16 strikes (two strings of 5) and
another 7 strikes in her 10th frame bonus shots. We bowled
6 girls and all of them worked extremely hard at adjusting
and staying on top of their games.
January 15, 2010
Sidney 2020 Troy 2058
The girls lost a heartbreaker. Neither team was on their “A”
game but Troy managed to pull through in baker to take the
match. The first regular game had Sidney down by 8 pins 823-815.
The girls threw a 900 the second regular game and Troy responded
with an 846. That put Sidney 46 pins ahead going into baker.
Our first baker game was a 144. We had one split, one washout,
and a total of 4 open frames. In the second baker game we
threw a 161; one split and a total of 4 open frames. Troy
threw baker games of 213 and 176. Troy finished the match
just 38 pins ahead of Sidney. Troy girls are still undefeated
with an 11-0 record. Sidney moves to a 9-2 overall record
and a 2-1 division record. Michelle Abbott threw a 201 and
Bethany Pellman added a 200.
January 13, 2010
Sidney 2281 Fairmont 2000
Sidney girls were victorious over Kettering Fairmont by a
final score of 2266 to 2000. Jenna Shaffer led the team with
two outstanding games of 259 and 267. Jenna has been solid
for us all year long. Her ability to adjust is excellent.
This sets a new record for the girl’s two game series
of 526. Kristin Abbott rolled games of 225 and 205. The team
also put together two excellent baker games of 213 and 224.
January 12, 2010
Sidney 1905 Piqua 1698
Both teams were victorious in Piqua. Lane conditions were
atypical as the lane oiling machine broke the day before.
The girls were led by Kristin Abbott with a 223 and Courtney
Thorpe rolled a 186. The girls advance their conference record
to 8-1 and their division record to 2-0. The bowlers learned
a lesson in patience and perseverance tonight. To be a good
bowler you have to keep adjusting and never give up. They
put in the hard work needed to be successful.
January 11, 2010
Sidney 2219 Butler 1742
Sidney girls were victorious beating Vandalia Butler on Monday
Bethany Pellman with a 249, Courtney Thorpe rolled a 226,
and Kristin Abbott a 212. Kristin is carrying a 196 average,
which is the fifth highest average in the GWOC conference
to date. The girls are getting better at handling heavier
oil conditions and making adjustments. They also improved
their spare shooting tonight!
January 5, 2010
Sidney 1993 Wayne 1934
Sidney girls were victorious beating Wayne on Tuesday evening
at Bel-Mar Lanes. This gives the team a 6-1 conference record.
Leading the girls was Kristin Abbott with a 238 and Jenna
Shaffer with a 201.
January 3, 2010 - Buckeye High
School Classic Tournament
Sidney 2nd
The Ohio State University Bowling Squad hosted the third annual
Buckeye High School Classic Tournament Sunday, January 3rd.
The university hosts the tournament to allow bowlers to bowl
on a “shot” similar to a collegiate pattern. The
Ohio State University bowlers and coaches are there and it’s
a good opportunity for our bowlers to get seen by the university
coaches. Sidney girls finished 2nd after battling the 3-time
girls champion, Westerville Central, in 3 games: 151-153,
166-158, and 135-173. The first two baker games were decided
in the tenth frame. In the third baker game we left the 2-10
split twice and the 4-6 split once. Leading the lady Jackets
was Jenna Shaffer who took second place All Tournament Team
honors. She threw games of 217, 145, and 214 for a 576 series.
Kristin Abbott was in 8th place overall throwing a 520 series
with a 221 game. Collegiate patterns are a lot tougher than
a typical house shot. The ratio of oil across the lane is
flatter and there’s less recovery and give. Our bowlers
bowled extremely well today. They had a tougher lane condition
and rose to the challenge. Once again the teams worked well
together in the fact that when we needed a sub to come in
and give us a lift we got that from the players!
December 22, 2009
Centerville 2291, Sidney 2193, Miamisburg
1707
Tuesday evening both the Sidney boys and girls varsity teams
were defeated for the first time, in a tri-match, by the Centerville
Elks. Both teams did add another win though by beating Miamisburg.
The girls only lost to Centerville by 98 pins. There were
13 single pin spares left standing. We’ll be working
on spare shooting. The girls put in a great effort, shooting
nearly 200 pins better than any previous match. Bethany Pellman
got hot and threw a 258, Jenna Shaffer and Kristin Abbott
both added a 198.
December 19, 2009 - Holiday
Tournament
Sidney 6th
Both Sidney teams made a great effort at making it into the
“top 5” step ladder finals at the Holiday Tournament
in Chillicothe on Saturday. The girls’ team placed 6th,
just 48 pins out of 5th place. Jenna Shaffer led the girls
with a 530 series. Shelbie Anderson added a 201 game. The
lane conditions consisted of a flat, heavy oil pattern. This
was a pattern that all of the new bowlers had never seen before
and it threw them at first. We made our adjustments and improved
with each of the three regular games. In baker, we failed
to make some key spares that would have placed us into the
step ladder finals. The girls’ enthusiasm and determination
through the end was commendable. We’ve got 1 rookie
starting on the boys’ varsity squad and 2 freshman girls
both bowling on the girls’ varsity squad. I think they
have all improved immensely.
December 18, 2009
Sidney 1906, Northmont 1735, Xenia 1493
Both the Sidney boy’s and girls varsity teams won their
second tri-match of the season. The teams bowled against Northmont
and Xenia at Bel-Mar Lanes on Friday, December 18th at 4:30.
Today the bowlers seemed right at home. After getting our
first match “nerves” out of our systems last week
the team settled in immediately today and made some good adjustments.
Both teams are now 4-0. Leading the girls was Jenna Shaffer
with a game of 227. Shelbie Anderson, freshman, chipped in
a game of 182 and Michelle Abbott, also a freshman, added
a game of 173.
December 11, 2009
Sidney 1995, Beavercreek 1830, Lebanon 1773
Both the Sidney boy’s and girls varsity teams won their
season openers. The teams bowled against Lebanon and Beavercreek
in a tri-match held at Bel-Mar Lanes on Friday, December 11th
at 4:30. Even though we were at home their mental game was a
bit shaky for the first regular game but improved as the match
continued. The lanes dried-out pretty quickly today and we needed
to make some fairly large adjustments. Some bowlers took a bit
too long to move inside. Overall it was a great learning experience
for all the bowlers. Leading the girls was Kristin Abbott with
a game of 201. Shelbie Anderson, freshman, chipped in games
of 163 and 183. |

7, 2009 - STATE TOURNAMENT
Dru Olding threw his three games on Saturday attempting to capture
the gold or silver medal and be crowned one of the top two bowlers
in the state of Ohio. The oil pattern did pose a bit of a challenge
for Dru on his spares; he had to adjust a bit further to the right
to get it to cross over for the left side spares. His strike shot
was there though. Dru throws a high number of revs and he had no
problem cutting thru the oil and to the pocket. They say once your
average gets to about 180 or more that the mental game becomes the
bigger obstacle than the physical game. I’d say that is ten-fold
when you’re competing at the state level. Individual bowlers
bowl with other individual bowlers, not team mates. Dru, as a sophomore,
did an exceptional job. He rolled a 538 series. The gold went to
Chase Carter from Riverside Stebbins with a 723 and the silver to
Justin Harnden from North Ridgeville with a 717. Dru was just a
few pins shy of qualifying for District last year. This is not the
end of Dru’s tournament competition. We expect Dru to be back
at State next year with the rest of the boy’s team competing
with him!
February 28, 2009 - DISTRICT
TOURNAMENT
Dru Olding Qualifies for the State Championships as an Individual
Competitor!
Sidney 11th
The Sidney boy’s team bowled Friday at Middletown. We had
some first game jitters and blew a lot of spares. Our first game
total was an 878. We were 81 pins out of 5th place. Only 5 boy’s
teams and 5 individuals would get the opportunity to advance to
state. Our second game was better at a 942 and the third game even
better at a 1024. Dru Olding led the team with games of 208, 260,
and 205 for a 673 series. Dru threw the first 9 strikes in his second
game and came a little high on the 10th ball leaving the 3, 4, 6,7
split. Dru finished 5th overall in the tournament individually.
After 3 regular games we were in 9th, 93 pins out of 5th; a reachable
goal. In the first baker game we left two big four splits (4, 6,
7, 10 pins) scoring just a 140. The guys pulled it back together
though and then threw games of 204, 203, and 213. Our 5th baker
game was a 185. In the 6th baker game we had three low first ball
counts and missed some spares. Overall we bowled some pretty good
baker games. We’ve got to remember how young we are. The girl’s
and boy’s teams both only lose one senior this year and both
teams had freshman starting Varsity this year. We are just getting
started! Boys teams advancing to the state championships from the
Southwest District are St. Xavier (Cincinnati), Beavercreek, Wayne,
Kenton Ridge, and Fairmont. 3 of the 5 teams are from the GWOC.
Sidney finished in 11th, but was only 120 pins from advancing. Dru
Olding, however, will advance as an individual competitor. Dru will
bowl at 11:00 and be finished around 4:00 that afternoon
February 21, 2009 - DISTRICT
TOURNAMENT
SHS Boys Bowling Team Finishes Strong in Baker to Place 3rd in Sectionals
and advance to District
Sidney Boy’s competed in the Southwest Sectional Championships
at Southwest Lanes in Urbana on Saturday. After the regular round
of three games Sidney was in 2nd position. There were 16 teams competing.
The top four teams and the top four individuals, not on the top
four qualifying teams, got to advance to Districts. Chris Duncan
led the way with games of 244, 254, and 206 for a 704 series. Chris
was fourth highest individually at the tournament. Trent Knoop placed
11th in the field by adding a 244 game and a 634 series. Cory Cotterman
rolled a 626 series to place him in the 13th position and Dru Olding
placed 17th with a 617. Cory had tough conditions today. The lanes
were pretty heavy with oil and being one of only a few left handed
bowlers he was trying to create his own track. The team totals for
the three regular games were 1062, 981, and 1009 for a 3052 series.
In our second game we missed a lot of spares and in the third game
we had a lot of 9 pin first shots. As we progressed through the
six games of baker the lanes continued to dry up and we needed to
move inside. We didn’t adjust quickly enough though. The first
three games of baker were a 156, 163, and 165. Everyone else in
the field was struggling as well and we were still in 2nd place.
In the 4th baker game Sidney threw a 157, not converting spares.
That dropped us to 5th. The 5th, 4th, 3rd, and 2nd place teams were
all within a span of 11 pins. The guys pulled it back together throwing
a 199 in the 5th game. That moved us up to 4th place in front of
Troy. The final baker game was a do or die. Our guys threw together
a 217 game, while Troy rolled a 212 and Bellefontaine fell to a
145 dropping them out of the top four. Kenton Ridge finished first
in the tournament with a 4405, Urbana 2nd with a 4126, Sidney 3rd
with a 4109, and Troy 4094. Bellefontaine was 50 pins short with
a 4044. The guys have struggled all year long with baker and today
was no different. However, they didn’t give up. They kept
adjusting and started picking up their spares. They could have easily
given up. The mental game gets to be such a challenge in baker.
The guys worked hard today and deserved their win. Click
here for complete Sectional Tournament results.
February 14, 2009 - GWOC Championship
Sidney Brings Home Numerous Medals From The GWOC Championship
Sidney boys and girl Bowling Teams made a run for first place in
the North Division this past Saturday, at Beaver Vu Lanes in Beavercreek,
but fell short to two talented Troy teams. Troy’s boys and
girls teams both took first place in the GWOC North Division. Troy
girls took first place in the GWOC championship and the boys tied
for first place with Centerville. Troy girls averaged 208 per game
with 25 games being thrown. Troy boys averaged 219. Sidney boy’s
ended their Conference season in 2nd Place in the GWOC North and
in 3rd place in the GWOC Conference Tournament. The boys averaged
202 a game. This was there best showing all season. The boys really
gave it their best shot. Dru Olding finished in 6th overall by shooting
a 234, 227, and a 225 for a 686 series. Dru received a medal for
making the All Conference Championship Team. Both Sidney teams finished
in 5th out of 16 in the overall conference finish.
Conference and divisional awards
were presented at the end of the tournament. Sidney walked away
with an additional 8 medals and one plaque. Cory Cotterman was the
North Divison Player of the Year by having the highest average for
boys in the North division with a 222. Cory received a plaque for
Player of the Year and a medal for being on the first team North
division. Trent Knoop joined Cory on the first team North division
with a season average of 203. Trent is a freshman this year. Chris
Duncan brought home a medal for his 200 season average and his title
of 2nd Team North Division. Zach Griffith was awarded the Special
Mention medal by the coaches. We are thrilled at the achievements
that the kids have made this year. We have a great group of kids
and they’ve been working very hard. Sidney traveled to Southwest
Lanes in Urbana on Monday afternoon to checkout the oil pattern
that they’ll see this weekend in Sectionals. The girls bowl
Friday at 10 and the boys will compete Saturday. The top 4 teams
out of 16 and the top 4 individuals not on the top four teams will
advance to the district tournament the following weekend in Middletown.
The kids did a great job today in Urbana and we look forward to
good scores on Friday and Saturday.
February 10, 2009 - Cotterman Ends
His Senior Season By Beating His Own Two Individual School Records
Sidney 2271 Springboro 2198
The Sidney boys won their match against Springboro with a final
score of 2272 to 2198. At the end of the regular round Sidney led
by just 30 pins. Sidney finished with baker games of 215 and 153.
Springboro threw baker games of 173 and 151. Sidney boys end their
season with a 10-8 conference record and an overall record of 13-8.
Cory was on his game again Tuesday night at Bel-Mar. Sidney celebrated
Senior Night and this was Cory’s last home match. Cory threw
games of 226 and 278. He had just one open in the first game leaving
a single pin spare on the last shot. The second game he threw the
first 7 strikes. In the 8th frame he had a 9 pin count, leaving
the 6 pin and converted it for a spare. He then went on to throw
3 more strikes and ended with a 9 on the final bonus ball. Cory’s
previous high game and school record was a 269 that he had thrown
at Troy Bowl versus Tipp City back on January 26th of this year.
His previous record for two game total was a 499 that he’d
thrown against Troy at Sherwood Lanes on January 9th of this year.
His two game series today was a 504. It’s exciting for Cory
to finish on such a high note and to throw the new game records
at Bel-Mar on Senior Night! Cory now carries a 222 conference game
average and a 223 all games average. It appears Cory will be named
to the GWOC 1st team with his conference average. Only one bowler
in the GWOC currently has a higher average and that is Ricky Brown
from Fairmont with a 227.

6th overall individually in the boys division. The first five individuals
were named to the GWOC first team. Centerville won the tournament
with a 193 average. The format consisted of five bowlers bowling

is now 8-8 and 11-8 overall.
January 30, 2009

January 19, 2009 - Baker Bash
Sidney 8th out of 12
This was the first time Sidney
had bowled in the tournament. The tournament format had each team
bowling two baker games. The top 6 teams would receive an extra
20 bonus pins for the first baker set. There were an extra 20 pins
given to the top 6/12 teams after each baker set. Sidney boy’s
started out well with Cory Cotterman on fire, throwing numerous
games of consecutive strikes in the 5th slot/position. But the last
few games cost Sidney too many pins. Sidney threw games of 191,
183, 202, 223, 211, 200, 202, 169, 205, 148, 156, and 169 placing
Sidney boys in 8th place out of 12 teams. Stebbins won in the boy’s
division throwing a 218 per game average. The top two teams received
medals.
January 16, 2009 - Sidney Boy’s
Win in a “Roll-Off” against Butler
Sidney 2284 Butler 2256
The Sidney Boy’s Bowling Team faced Bulter at Bel-Mar Lanes.
Following the first round of regular games Sidney was leading by
just 12 pins, 1844-1832. Leading Sidney were Trent Knoop with a
229, Chris Duncan with a 224, and Cory Cotterman with a 213. Sidney
didn’t cover its spares in the first baker game and threw
a 149 to Butler’s 169. This put Butler 8 pins in the lead.
In the second baker game Sidney pulled it together and threw a 253
and Butler also improved to a 245. The match was now in a tie, 2246-2246.
We’ve never ended a match in a tie before so I had to pull
out the rule books. The rulebook stated that the game would be decided
on a 9th and 10th frame roll-off with two bowlers, one from each
team. Chris Duncan bowled for Sidney and scored 38 pins. Butler
bowled one boy for the 9th frame, who threw a strike, and then put
in a different boy for the 10th frame. It was a misunderstanding
on the coaches part, but ended with a bowler “bowling out
of order” violation and resulted in the 10th frame being scored
as a zero. Sidney won by 28 pins.
January 13, 2009
Sidney 2380 Piqua 1942
Sidney 1003, 983, 213, 181
Piqua Boy’s 809, 827, 129, 177
Leading Sidney was Chris Duncan with a 258 and a 201. Cory Cotterman
had a 246 and a 199. Cory is in 5th place in the GWOC for high average.
Trent Knoop added a 211.
January 9, 2009
Sidney 2334 Troy 2354
The boys lost in a very hard fought match. Leading Sidney in the
regular round was Cory Cotterman with a 265 and a 234 for a two
game series of 499. Cory beat his own two game record of 466. Chris
Duncan added a 211 and Zach Griffith a 210. Sidney started the match
with a season high game of 1006 and followed it with a 931. This
put Sidney 50 pins below Troy at the beginning of the baker round.
We missed a couple of key spares in the first baker game throwing
a 180 to Troy’s 201. That put the Jackets 71 pins down, but
they didn’t give up. The Jackets rallied to put together a
217 game to Troy’s 166. Sidney lost by 20 pins (2354-2334).
I’m very proud of both teams. They walked into a very crowded
Troy “house” and gave a good show! Sidney will meet
Troy again, only on our own “turf”, on Tuesday, January
27 at 3:45. It’s sure to be a great re-match. We hope we can
show as much support for our home team as Troy did.
January 7, 2009
Sidney 2196 Springfield 2048
For Sidney, Cory Cotterman threw a 194 and a 223, and Chris Duncan

rolled a 279 and a 265. Fairmont came into the match undefeated.
Sidney boy’s record is now 1-5.

January 4, 2008 - 2nd Annual Buckeye
High School Classic Tournament
Sidney 5th
Sidney competed in the 2nd Annual Buckeye High School Classic Tournament
at Sequoia Pro Bowl in Columbus on Saturday. The tournament is put
on by the OSU Bowling Club. There were 18 boy’s teams from
across the state that entered the tournament. The tournament consisted
of 3 regular games and 5 baker games. The shot was a sport pattern;
much more difficult than a normal house shot. Cory Cotterman earned
3rd all tournament honors in the boy’s division by throwing
a 202, 179, and 186 for a 567. The high scorer for the boys shot
a 600. The team placed 5th out of the 18 teams. They were just 98
pins below qualifying for the finals. Westerville Central won the
boy’s division for the second year in a row. The Westerville
teams practice at Sequoia Lanes. The Boy’s Team is coached
by Ohio State University’s Girl’s coach, Jeff Robinson.
I’m extremely proud of all of our bowlers. We do not ever
get the opportunity to bowl on a sport shot other than this one
tournament. It’s a very different condition and it’s
a tough shot. It’s difficult to keep your drive up when you’re
throwing 40 pins or more below average. We had worked last week
on using a dull, arching ball and a plastic ball to cut down on
over-reaction. It seemed to help. This tournament is also a great
opportunity to get noticed by the OSU coaching staff. They are definitely
interested in recruiting Sidney’s players.
December 22, 2008
Beavercreek 2429, Sidney 2269, Lebanon 2151
Sidney boys only lost to Beavercreek by 160 pins. They were down
222 pins after the two games of regulation and came back in baker
throwing a 214 and a 207, narrowing the gap to 160 pins. Sidney
was led by Chris Duncan who threw a 224 and a 215 and by Cory Cotterman
who added a 226 and a 212. Sidney boy’s current record is
1-3
December 17, 2008
Sidney 2240 Northmont 2274
SHS bowling got off to a great start. On Wednesday at Timber Lanes
the lanes started-out wet, but quickly dried-out. The kids did a
great job with making adjustments. The boys were led by Freshman,
Trent Knoop who rolled a 214 and a 201. Cory Cotterman rolled a
206 and Chris Duncan a 201. The boys entered the baker games with
a 129 pin deficit. The guys made an excellent effort, throwing a
181 and a 212, making up 95 pins, but it wasn’t enough. Northmont
finished 34 pins higher than Sidney. Current record is 0-1. |

7, 2009 - STATE TOURNAMENT
Sidney Girl’s Finish 10th out of 16th in the State
Sidney girl’s battled tough lane conditions in Lancaster on
Thursday. We drove over Thursday after school and practiced on the
Lanes (Tiki Lanes) that evening. We were told we were on fresh oil
and the pattern that we’d see the next day. It didn’t
play-out that way. On Thursday evening it played more like our normal
house shot with a little extra oil. On Friday, of course the temperature
was high and the bowling alley was packed full of people and the
air conditioning was not running. The temperature inside was between
80 and 90 degrees. We started out in the middle of the house; the
hottest place to be. The oil was quite heavy, much heavier than
our practice shot the night before. They did disclose the oil pattern
ahead of time and we knew they were suppose to put down 26 units
and we found all 26 units down on Friday. We had to make some major
adjustments to get the ball into the pocket and keep it from deflecting.
The oil carried down a long way. We ended up throwing a 767 our
first game. That number put us in 10th position just 51 pins out
of 8th place behind Youngstown Austintown Fitch and Stebbins. Troy
led the way from the start. For our second game we moved one pair
to the right. Again we found a lot of oil. This time we would see
the ball start to break and then fish tail. Coach Abbott and I both
commented that it was the toughest shot we’d ever seen and
we wouldn’t have wanted to bowl on it ourselves. Again we
moved some people to the far right edge hoping to simply angle the
ball in to clear the deck. We were even adjusting for all of our
spares. Not moving as far for the right side spares trying to keep
the ball on the lane and moving farther for the left side spares
trying to cut thru the oil. Our second game was only a 725. The
girls were battling frustration in the fact that they were adjusting
but we just couldn’t get the pins to carry. For our third
game we moved to the far left end of the house to lanes 3 &
4. All of the high scores had been coming from this end. It was
about 10-20 degrees cooler. The door was open. This allowed the
lanes to break down quicker and the oil to evaporate quicker. It
was on this pair of lanes we finally found some back-end. We proceeded
to throw the tournament high game of 976 led by Kristin Abbott with
a 280. Kristin threw a 9 spare (10 pin) in the second frame and
had a strike for the other 11 shots. Kristin’s 280 was a new
tournament record. Her name will go into the state program for next
year and years to come until someone out rolls her. Kristin’s
series was a 597; enough to place her 4th in the individual competition.
High series was only a 608. Our third game bumped us up to 8th place.
Stebbins was right behind us, lacking just 8 pins and Beavercreek
was 42 pins behind. Baker has been our pride and joy all year long,
but it gave us some problems today. We ended the Qualifying Round
with baker games of 165, 170, and 134. Nerves and not covering spares
cost us. We finished in 10th place just 41 pins shy of advancing
to the championship round. The girls worked so hard all day long.
This was definitely the most challenging lane conditions I’ve
ever seen. I stayed and watched the championship rounds. The two
lanes used were playing completely different from each other. I
guess that’s what winning a state championship is all about;
adjusting. We are young. We’re only losing one senior. The
girls know what it’s like to bowl in a state championship
and they’ll be back next year with more experience and confidence.
I’m very proud of their accomplishments and their hard work.
February
28, 2009 - DISTRICT TOURNAMENT
Sidney Girl’s Bowling Team is State Bound!
Sidney 5th at 3863
Sidney girl’s bowled their hearts out Saturday during the
Southwest District Championships at Eastern Lanes in Middletown.
There were 24 teams competing and the top 6 teams and the top 6
individuals not on the qualifying teams won the right to go to state.
Sidney started strong with a 939 first regular game. Bethany Pellman,
freshman, led the way with a 209 and Kristin Abbott added a 202.
For the 2nd regular game the girls threw a 991. Kristin threw a
223 and Bethany a 211. After the first two regular games Sidney
was in 2nd place. The girls were making every spare they left in
the first two games and then came the third game. A number of missed
spares dropped us to 5th with a total of 862 for a three game regular
total of 2792. Kristin added another excellent game with a 204.
Kristin rolled a 629 series, placing her 8th overall in the entire
field. Bethany Pellman finished with a 611, placing 15th overall.
She threw a personal best high game and series. I have felt all
season long that we had a few bowlers that we didn’t have
at their potential yet. Coach Abbott and I worked hard the last
two weeks with some adjustments and it proved well this weekend.
Sidney started the baker round with a commanding 210 and a 190.
The third through 5th games found us adjusting again and missing
a few spares. We pulled together scores of 142, 164, and 164. The
girls didn’t give up though. The 6th game was a 201. Our final
total score was 3863. The girls finished 5th overall. The GWOC has
always had the reputation of being the toughest conference in the
state for bowling and this weekend proved that. Advancing for the
girls is Troy, Centerville (2 time state champions), Beavercreek
(past state champions), Sidney, and Fairborn. Stebbins, the only
non-GWOC team, is also advancing from the Southwest District.
February 21, 2009 - SECTIONAL
TOURNAMENT
Sidney 3rd at 3722
Sidney Girl’s competed in the Southwest Sectional Championships
at Southwest Lanes in Urbana on Friday. After the regular round
of three games Sidney was in 4th position. There were 16 teams competing.
The top four teams and the top four individuals, not on the top
four qualifying teams, got to advance to Districts. Kristin Abbott
led the way with games of 227, 213, and 197 for a 637 series. Kristin
was second highest in a field of 68 bowlers. Jenna Shaffer placed
10th in the field and added a 583 series. Katie Keith rolled a 560
series to place her in the 15th position. The team averaged 172
for the regular round. We quickly found our line on the first pair
of lanes, but upon moving to the second pair for the second game
we had different lane conditions. We ended up adjusting to the outside
to get the ball to come up. In the third game we were back between
the 5 and 10 boards, however we missed a number of easy spares.
The girls have always been strong baker bowlers and they proved
that again today. They threw games of 192, 215, 233 (new school
record for high baker game; they had set a new record earlier this
year with a 229 game), 161, 179, and 169. Sidney averaged 192 in
the baker set and 177 overall for the day. Their effort in baker
moved the girls into third place ahead of Ben Logan. The team will
compete in the District Championships at Eastern Lanes in Middletown
next Saturday. . Click

Sidney girls ended
their season also in 2nd Place in the GWOC North and in 6th place
in the GWOC Conference Tournament. Both Sidney teams finished in
5th out of 16 in the overall conference finish. Following the three
game round Troy had already taken a commanding lead over the entire
field in the girls division. I choose to bowl all 8 girls during
the baker round. We’ve got sectionals coming up this next
week and I want all of the girls to get as much tournament experience
as possible.
Conference and divisional awards
were presented at the end of the tournament. Sidney walked away
with an additional 8 medals and one plaque. For the girls Kristin
Abbott took home first team honors with her 190 average. Katie Keith
had a 177 average and Jenna Shaffer a 164 average to earn both of
them a 2nd Team North Division position. Bethany Pellman, freshman,
was chosen by the coaches to receive the special mention medal.
We are thrilled at the achievements that the kids have made this
year. We have a great group of kids and they’ve been working
very hard. Sidney traveled to Southwest Lanes in Urbana on Monday
afternoon to checkout the oil pattern that they’ll see this
weekend in Sectionals. The girls bowl Friday at 10 and the boys
will compete Saturday. The top 4 teams out of 16 and the top 4 individuals
not on the top four teams will advance to the district tournament
the following weekend in Middletown. The kids did a great job today
in Urbana and we look forward to good scores on Friday and Saturday.

on the Sidney squad this year. Katie helped the team beat Springboro

their season with a 16-2 conference record and an overall record
of 19-2. This puts Sidney girls in a tie for the North Division
Championship with the Troy girls. The GWOC tournament will decide
the GWOC North Division Champions. Teams receive points, to be added
to their league points, based on their standings at the tournament.
Division Champions are named by total points won.

193, 256, and 204. For Baker Sidney threw a 133 and a 178. Troy
rolled a 168 and a 152. Sidney lost by 173 pins. This drops the

Sidney 4th out of 12
This was the first time Sidney
had bowled in the tournament. The tournament format had each team
bowling two baker games. The top 6 teams would receive an extra
20 bonus pins for the first baker set. There were an extra 20 pins
given to the top 6/12 teams after each baker set. Sidney girls’
were up and down all day. We missed a lot of spares and had a higher
number of splits than we usually see. Our games included: 145, 186,

matches than Sidney so their winning percentage was higher. Troy
was number 1 and Sidney was number 2. Sidney rolled a season high
and new team record of 940 and a 909 for an 1849 after the regular
round. Troy had an 1851; just 2 pins in front of Sidney. Both teams
shot poorly in the first baker game; Sidney a 135 to Troy’s
126. This put Sidney 7 pins in the lead. In the final baker game
Sidney put together a 229 game; also a new team record. The girls
were on their game. They threw the first three strikes, a spare,
and the next four strikes. Katie Keith started the 10th frame with
a strike and then left the big four split (4,6,7, & 10 pins).
She covered the 6 and 10 pins. Troy threw the last 6 strikes, but
it wasn’t enough. Sidney won by the narrow margin of 1 pin
(2213-2212). Leading Sidney were Katie Keith with a 216 and Jenna
Shaffer with a 210. The girl’s have done a super job of playing
the mental game and coming through under pressure. For Troy, Alicia
Simpson threw the first 10 strikes to end with a 288 game. I’m
very proud of both teams. They walked into a very crowded Troy “house”
and gave a good show! Sidney will meet Troy again, only on our own
“turf”, on Tuesday, January 27 at 3:45. It’s sure
to be a great re-match. We hope we can show as much support for
our home team as Troy did.

January 4, 2008 - 2nd Annual Buckeye
High School Classic Tournament
Sidney 3rd
There were 14 girl’s teams that competed. Kristin Abbott took
1st place all tournament honors by shooting a 609 (183, 188, and
238). Katie Keith earned 6th place all tournament honors with her
517 (151, 170, and 196). The girl’s took a little time during
the first game to find a line that would work for them. We tried
the outside line and it seemed a bit too wet. Our first game only
totaled 697 but was high enough to put us in 6th place. Then the
girls found their groove. They came back the 2nd game to throw an
819, an increase of 122 pins. The field only averaged a 26 pin gain.
Again in the third game the girls stepped up their game to an 849
while the rest of the field dropped by 14 pins. At the end of the
three game regular round Sidney was in 2nd place. When we got to
baker we simply fell apart. We resorted to some bad habits that
cost us quite a bit in score. Our baker scores were 114, 137, 159,
158, and 140. That dropped us to 4th place but it was good enough
to get us into the playoff round. In the playoff round the 1st and
4th place teams played each other and the 2nd and 3rd place teams
played each other in a best of 3 baker games. We were matched against
last year’s girl’s champion Westerville. Sidney rolled
a 167 to Westerville’s 145; giving Sidney the first win. In
the second game we missed too many spares and dropped the game 161-131.
The third game was a nail-biter. We almost threw a clean game. Westerville
strung 4 strikes together in the middle of the game. The final score
was 189-180. Westerville went on to beat Austiontown Fitch (Youngstown)
to claim the girl’s title for the 2nd year in a row. I’m
extremely proud of all of our bowlers. We do not ever get the opportunity
to bowl on a sport shot other than this one tournament. It’s
a very different condition and it’s a tough shot. It’s
difficult to keep your drive up when you’re throwing 40 pins
or more below average. We had worked last week on using a dull,
arching ball and a plastic ball to cut down on over-reaction. It
seemed to help. This tournament is also a great opportunity to get
noticed by the OSU coaching staff. They are definitely interested
in recruiting Sidney’s players.

Beavercreek 2380, Sidney 1981, Lebanon 1382
Sidney faced a tough opponent –Beavercreek on Monday. Kathryn
Cox, for Beavercreek threw a 246 and a 249. For Sidney, high series
was thrown by Courtney Thorpe with a 186 and a 175. The girl’s
score was good enough to roll past Lebanon. This was Sidney’s
first loss. Their record is now 3-1.
