Welcome Head Volleyball Coach Ashleigh Ratermann!

New varsity volleyball coach Ashleigh Ratermann has already hit the ground running at a full sprint. Recently hired by the district as the head coach, the Sidney Middle School teacher has begun her quest to build the volleyball program.

Ratermann, a Celina native, is fresh off a stint as varsity coach at nearby New Bremen. It was a hard season, she says, but one that taught her valuable lessons in the end. The Cardinals were 3-18 at the conclusion of the 2009 season.

“It was difficult to coach in a place where I didn’t live,” explained Ratermann. “I couldn’t see the girls and interact with them like I wanted. It was hard to build the program, but I’m grateful for the experience.”

Ratermann played volleyball herself as a student in Celina, going on to play club volleyball in college at the University of Toledo. She now lives in Sidney with her husband, expressing how fulfilling it is to be part of the community.

“I love Sidney,” explained Ratermann. “I love living and working here and it’s made for such a for me.” fulfilling experience; now being a head coach only adds to that.

She views being a second year teacher at Sidney Middle School as a great advantage in building strong relationships and fostering interest in students. Her players getting to know her as a coach, she says, all begins with getting to know her as a teacher.

Though the fall volleyball season hasn’t begun, Ratermann is already showing her true colors by working behind the scenes to ensure every detail is in place for August. She has worked tirelessly to build a youth program, encouraging fifth and sixth grade Sidney students to join a Shelby County-wide youth volleyball league. She holds open gym sessions for junior high students and has the Junior Varsity and Varsity hopefuls hitting the weight room and attending volleyball camps.

It’s all about getting the girls started young, says Ratermann.

“I truly believe that the cornerstone of every strong volleyball program starts at a young age,” explains Ratermann. “The girls need to build themselves and their interest and stick with it through their academic career. It all starts with an interest in the sport and builds when they root themselves in the volleyball. When we get them engaged, we’re all successful.”

She points out that Sidney is the only school in the GWOC League that currently does not have a freshman volleyball team. This disappoints her, she says, and is motivating as she works to build a strong program and improve participation to someday have enough students to fill a freshman roster.

While Ratermann’s focus is currently on the youth program, she hasn’t forgotten about the Varsity and JV programs. All assistant coaching positions are currently wide open as the district searches for assistants to help build the program along with Ratermann. She’s ready, she says, to start the season on a positive note. As a teacher, the importance of learning isn’t lost on Ashleigh.

“I believe volleyball, any sport for that matter, isn’t about winning. It’s about accomplishing a goal for yourself,” she says with a smile. “The girls need positive reinforcement, to feel good about themselves and to have fun. Winning is just the icing on the cake.”

Ratermann explains that she will be working to teach them the game, show them how to play and let the experience be their guide through the upcoming season. Playing as a team, she points out, is truly what makes you successful.

Sidney defeated by Graham 25-18, 25-13, 25-23
The girls played well despite all of our current injuries. Our passing improved this match. We've been working hard on this skill all week. Now we just need to be consistent with our passing game so we can push a smarter offensive attack. Jenna Alexander (senior) lead the team with 7 service points, 3 aces, and 5 kills. Alyssa Watkins (junior) and Bethany Pellman (sophomore) each had about 10 strong kill attempts but Graham's defense was able to dig them up. It proved to be very tough to break through their defense. We need to work on our offensive strategies more this week.

Sidney defeated by Greenville
Sidney girls volleyball fell to Greenville last night at home. Varsity lost a tough 5 game match. We just couldn't get our serves over and in when we really needed to. Serve receive also brought us down a bit. These girls have come a long way though. This is now our 3rd 5 game match. They are in better condition then they have been in the past. Jenna Alexander served 6 aces and made 6 kills. Destiny Kellerman had 18 assists and 5 digs. Alyssa Watkins served 3 aces, made 6 kills and 2 blocks. Libby Cupps had 16 digs and 2 kills.

Sidney defeated by Springfield North 25-19, 25-11, 25-10

October 9, 2007
Sidney defeated by Butler 25-8, 25-20, 25-21
Each game we improved so I am proud of my girls for playing hard. Butler is the number one seed and we made them work for it in the last 2 games. Chelsey Borland had 6 kills, 4 blocks, 1 ace. Lizzy Kunk had 6 kills, 1 block, 1 ace. Cindy Hemmelgarn 2 blocks, 2 aces. Shanna Fair 6 digs. Elyse Roddy 8 digs. JV: Sidney defeated by Butler 25-17, 25-15. Gabby Stutz and Jenny Fair each had 4 points. Taylor Thompson had 5 kills.

October 6, 2007
Sidney defeated by Botkins 25-11, 25-12, 25-17
JV: Sidney defeated Botkins 19-25, 25-23, 25-16. Destiny Kellerman had 15 assists, 4 digs, 4 kills, 13 points and 4 aces. Danielle Richards had 10 kills, 4 digs, and 6 points. Jenny Fair had 7 points and 5 digs. Emily Ocke had 10 digs. Taylor Thompson had 5 points and 3 digs. Gabby Stutz had 5 digs.

October 4, 2007
Sidney defeated by Troy 25-7. 25-22, 25-13
Game 1 was a blow out, 7-25. We had no serve receive. No one could pass the ball up to set up a play. Troy's middle hitter, Breezy Stele was a huge weapon against us. They were running quick attacks and my middles just couldn't get a block up in time. We woke up in game 2 and made some smart plays. We started hitting their short middle and were able to put a few down. Serve receive improved. However, it was still not enough for a win. Game 3 was tough. We couldn't execute attacks. Serve receive declined and we lost 13-25. Elyse Roddy had 11 digs. Shanna Fair had 3 digs. Lizzy Kunk and Cindy Hemmelgarn both had 3 kills. JV: Sidney defeated by Troy 25-4, 22-25, 25-16. Jenny Fair had 6 digs and 4 points. Emily Ocke served 7 points. Gabby Stutz had 4 digs. Destiny Kellerman had 10 assists and 4 points. Taylor Thompson had 6 digs and 5 kills. Danielle Richards had 4 points. Their record falls to 4 and 15.

October 2, 2007
Sidney defeated by Piqua 25-14, 25-16, 25-13
Even though we lost, I felt my Team played great net defense tonight. We have been working on net coverage a lot lately in practice and they definitely improved that skill. We had some great volleys off blocks. Cindy Hemmelgarn shut Piqua down in the middle. It was an exciting match. Unfortunately, our serve receive killed us. Piqua had some good servers who had us running everywhere to pass the ball. Our communication and movement slowed down so we shanked the ball. You can't set up an offensive attack without a good pass. Elyse Roddy had 3 kills, 10 digs, 2 assists, 1 ace. Cindy Hemmelgarn had 2 kills, 4 blocks, 2 digs.

September 29, 2007
Sidney defeated by Jackson Center 25-9, 25-10

September 27, 2007
Sidney defeated Trotwood 25-6, 25-19, 25-6
This improves there record to 6-9. Summer Kellerman had 16 points and 9 aces. Chelsey Borland made 15 points and 8 aces. Lizzy Kunk had 6 points with 6 kills. Elyse Roddy had 5 kills...3 digs and 3 aces. The Lady Jackets play again this Saturday 9/29 at home in a tri-match against West Liberty and Jackson Center. The first match begins at 10 am. Reminder - Don't forget to come and support our team Oct. 9 for the Volley for a Cure match against Butler! Help us support breast cancer awareness in Sidney. JV: Sidney defeated Trotwood 25-10, 25-11. Taylor Thompson had 11 points. Danielle Richards served 10 points and 5 aces.

September 25, 2007
Sidney defeated Wayne 25-22, 24-26, 25-23, 25-13
The Lady Jackets pulled off another win tonight against Wayne winning 3 of 4 games. The girls did a good job of staying on top of their game. They played smart and had quite a few strong hits that split Wayne's blockers. Lizzy Kunk ended up with 15 kills while Elyse Roddy had 10. We finally figured out that their hitters mainly utilized our short middle court on most of their attacks so we were able to adjust our defense and dig most of them. Elyse Roddy had 16 digs. Summer Kellerman had 28 assists. JV: Sidney defeated Wayne 30-28, 25-19. Jenna Alexander had 7 kills. Danielle Richards had 14 points(including a 6 point run) and 3 aces. Destiny Kellerman had 12 assists. Gabby Stutz had 5 digs. Their record is 3 and 11.

September 20, 2007
Sidney defeated South 25-15, 25-10 and 25-17
The Lady Jackets dominated South all 3 games. Sidney's serving was great. Summer Kellerman had a great run in the first game of 7 points and 3 aces in one rotation. Jenna Alexander also had a 7 point run with one ace. In the next game it was Elyse Roddy's turn to dominate with her serving completing an 8 point run with 3 aces. Cindy Hemmelgarn had 6 kills and Lizzy Kunk had 5 kills. JV: Sidney defeated by South 25-18, 21-25, 25-15. Destiny Kellerman had 11 assists, 5 points and 5 kills. Emily Ocke had 12 digs. Gabby Stutz had 8 points and 11 digs.

September 18, 2007
Sidney defeated by Centerville 25-14, 25-15, 25-22
The girls played strong all three games. We were just out hit. Centerville's left side attacked our deep corners and we couldn't dig all of them. However, the balls that we could dig ended up in some great volleys. I finally witnessed my girls play well in pressure situations. They transitioned well and got back on defense much better than prior games. Lizzy Kunk had 8 kills, 3 digs, 2 aces. Elyse Roddy had 2 kills, 13 digs. Jenna Alexander had 3 kills. Cindy Hemmelgarn had 3 kils.

September 15, 2007
Sidney defeated by Urbana 25-15, 25-15, 25-14
The girls again had some really exciting volleys ending in our point during the 3 games. They fought hard but it just wasn't enough. It seems like we are always playing the catch up game against our opponents. We need to focus on sticking with them point to point. Leading stats were: Cindy Hemmelgarn with 4 points, 4 kills, 1 assist. Jerika Martens with 4 kills. Summer Kellerman had a 100% serving percentage, 5 points, 1 ace, 6 assists. Shanna Fair had a nearly perfect passing game. JV: Sidney defeated by Urbana 25-16, 25-18. Kaitlin Osborne had 6 digs. Their record falls to 2 and 9.

September 13, 2007
Sidney defeated by Miamisburg 25-17, 25-18, 25-18
I know that my team has the ability to win matches. It's their mental game that causes problems. The girls are not recovering well after bad plays. They take it too hard and then can't recover quick enough. We had quite a few really good volleys within the three games but it wasn't enough to pull off a win. Elyse Roddy and Shanna Fair both did a great job of reading the hits back row and following with good passes. Miamisburg just had a couple of hitters that hit our perimeter deep. When the blockers don't get a touch on the ball it's difficult to dig those corner shots. Lizzy Kunk lead our offense with 4 kills and 6 points. Summer Kellerman had 7 assists. Cindy Hemmelgarn had 4 blocks. JV: Sidney defeated by Miamisburg 25-13, 23-25, 25-13. Gabby Stutz 8 points, 3 aces, 7 digs. Nikki Cupps 6 points. Kaitlin Osborne 5 points. Their record falls to 2 and 8.

September 11, 2007
Sidney defeated by Greenville 25-9, 25-9, 25-20
We had a tough night at Greenville. We lost a key front row player due to an ankle injury early in the game and didn't really recover from it until the last game. I had to change some positions and the girls were not ready for it. We beat ourselves mentally and Greenville's team didn't make it any easier on us. They are a quick and scrappy team. We couldn't find many holes in their defense. They covered the court well. Elyse Roddy had 9 digs Shanna Fair had 3 digs. JV: Sidney defeated by Greenville 18-25, 17-25. Taylor Thompson 8 points, 7 digs, 3 kills. Gabby Stutz 5 points.

September 8, 2007
Sidney defeated by Fairborn 25-21, 25-21
The girls looked a lot better than they have in the past week. They played defense but it just wasn't enough to stop Fairborn's outside hitters.

Sidney defeated Stebbins 23-25, 25-22, 26-24
We cleaned up our defense and had a much more efficient offense in the last 2 games, winning 25-22 and 26-24. Serves were great and our attacks were smart. We put the ball down in every hole. My girls performed well under pressure.

September 6, 2007
Sidney 0 North 3
We lost in 3 games against North last night. They were a tougher team than I had expected them to be. They had height and quickness over us. We hung with them in the last two games with a few strong kills but our serving was not consistent enough to keep us ahead. Summer Kellerman 6 points, 1 ace, 16 assists. Lizzy Kunk 4 points, 3 aces, 4 kills. Cindy Hemmelgarn 5 kills. Chelsey Borland 4 kills. Elyse Roddy 3 kills.

September 4, 2007
Sidney 0 Fairmont 3
Chelsey Borland 3 points, 1 ace, 5 kills, 2 blocks. Elyse Roddy 3 points, 2 kills. Cindy Hemmelgarn 3 points, 2 kills, 3 blocks. JV: Sidney 2 Fairmont 0. Destiny Kellerman 7 assists. Emily Ocke 7 points, 3 aces. Gabby Stutz 5 points, 2 aces.

September 1, 2007
Sidney 3 Wapakoneta 1
Lack of communication killed us in the first game. There was too much confusion between hitters which caused sloppy attacks. We had little coverage on hits and blocks. Serving was inconsistent. The girls were getting too frustrated with themselves. However, after we talked about staying positive and self-correcting out on the court, they all seemed to play and communicate better in the next three games. Passing was consistent. We executed smarter attacks. We did not fold under the pressure of our own mistakes. They stayed positive and made up for their mistakes with a good play. Chelsey Borland 15 pts, 4 aces, 7 kills. Elyse Roddy 12 pts, 2 aces, 6 kills. Summer Kellerman 22 pts, 2 aces, 17 assists. Jenna Alexander 10 pts, 5 aces.

August 30, 2007
Sidney 0 Fairborn 3
It's tough to lose after you've won the first game. We started out so strong. Passing, hitting and serving was consistent. Things went down hill from there though. Game 2 we started making too many serving errors. This caused our moral to fall. Then we started making hitting errors also. Game 3 and 4 went about the same. Too many errors. We just need to fight through those tough rotations and keep our heads in the game. Consistency is everything. Sidney stats----Summer Kellerman had 20 assists -Cindy Hemmelgarn had 6 kills Fairborn stats: Alexis Autry had 8 kills and 8 blocks -Amanda Lilley had 21 digs -Lindsey Doster had 14 assists and 5 aces.

Sidney 3 Xenia 1
The girls looked lost in the first game because I changed the line up a bit. Some players weren't used to playing their new defensive positions so I think this caused the first loss. In the next 3 games they worked together. Passed well. Shanna Fair (Senior-Libero) is so consistent in the back row with her passing. We were able to run a consistent offense due to her passing and digs. We communicated more. Executed smart attacks and ultimately served well. Everything just seemed to come together and we came out with our first win of the season. Top stats: Summer Kellerman (Junior-Setter) went 22 for 24 serving with 4 aces. Other key servers were Elyse Roddy (Senior-RF) and Jerika Martens (Junior- LF). Chelsey Borland (Senior- MH) lead the offense with 11 kills. Lizzy Kunk (Senior-LF) and Cindy Hemmelgarn (Senior-MH) executed many smart hits that led to many of our points earned.

Sidney beat by Fairborn 21-25, 25-18, 25-21, 25-16
The Yellow Jackets came out in game 1 and showed some confidence in their game as they managed to avoid the errors that plagued them during the last part of the regular season. Sidney tied the game at 6 with a kill by Lizzy Kunk and took the lead for good after 2 more kills, one each by Megan Moore and Chelsea Borland who was returning to action after missing the last 4 games due to a sprained ankle. Shanna Fair added 2 Aces putting the Jackets up by 4. Fairborn picked up 2 points as Sidney hitters found themselves just outside the lines on their kill attempts. Molly Johnson and Courtney Richardson teamed up on a block to earn a point and a Fairborn side out. Johnson then went on a 6 point serving run aided by Richardson who had 2 solo blocks and a kill. Down 11-21 Fairborn’s All-GWOC first teamer Michelle Nicol made her presence known starting with a block to force the side out and then she served 3 aces on a run of 7 serves to pull the Skyhawks to within 3 at 18-21. A Johnson kill stopped the Fairborn surge and the Jackets traded kills with them until Megan Moore stuff a Fairborn attack and Richardson followed with a kill to earn the victory at 25-21. After 14 kills in the first game the Sidney attack went cold in game 2, as the Jackets gave up 6 points on hitting errors while Fairborn helped their own cause with 5 kills. Moore and Johnson teamed up for a block to make the score 5-12. The teams traded side outs over the next 4 points and the Jackets rallied behind the serving of Molly Johnson to narrow the gap to 12-14 after an ace by Johnson and 4 kills, three of them by Richardson. Sidney missed on another kill attempt and Fairborn followed that with 2 aces to widen the gap. Megan Moore then came up big for Sidney with a solo block and 2 kills to bring Sidney within 1 at 17-18. The comeback stopped there as the Jacket attack went cold again with 5 errors and Nichol slammed the door with 2 more Aces for the 25-18 victory by Fairborn. The Jackets stayed even with Fairborn in game 3 with 5 kills and 2 blocks to take an 8-7 lead. The teams continued to trade points with the Jackets starting to pull away at 16-13, but the Skyhawks rallied again behind the strong play of Nichol who blocked a shot to earn the side out and then she went to the line and took the Jackets out of the game with 2 more aces while Sidney hurt their own cause by ending 10 of the next 11 points with hitting errors. Down 18-24, Sidney made a run until Fairborn ended the game with a block to win 25-21. Fairborn rushed to a 12-4 lead in the final game of the night as Sidney struggled with the passing game. When Sidney was able to get a little spark by putting it together for a kill, Fairborn answered by a kill of their own to thwart any comeback attempt. Facing the end of their season at 12-23, the Jackets made one last effort with 2 kills by Moore, 1 by Johnson and 1 last ace by Shanna Fair. The Skyhawks stopped the rally with a kill and claimed the win after one more unforced error by Sidney. Stat leaders for the night: Megan Moore 13 Kills, 4 total blocks (2 solo/2 assisted), 6 digs. Courtney Richardson 13 kills, 5 total blocks (2 solo/ 3 assisted). Molly Johnson 32 assists, 4 kills, 3 total blocks (all assisted), 10 digs and an ace. Shanna Fair 3 aces, 8 digs. Summer Kellerman had the lone serving ace for Sidney. Northmont came into the contest leading the GWOC in ACE serves and they peppered the Jackets with a wide variety of serves for 13 total aces in the first two games. They also had 14 kills many that were of the tip it or dink it to the holes in the Sidney defense. The Jackets finally got into a good rhythm in game 3 holding a 21-15 lead before letting the T-Bolts back into the ball game at 21-21. The Jackets served for the win at 24-23 but Northmont was able to keep a Sidney block in play and the ensuing Sidney block went wide of the line. Northmont then came up with a big block to go up 25-24 and won the game as two Jackets miscommunicated letting the ball drop between them.
